No way that I was going to ride the bike to town today to pick up the morning paper. It was below freezing and I still haven’t gotten around to working on the brakes, which occasionally stick and are noisy.
I noticed a call from Craig to ride trail this morning on our mountain bikes, but the layer of ice under the snow here meant I’d have to remove one set of tires from that bike and then mount up the studded set. Don’t want to that either.
We decided to go to plan B and get some snowshoeing in. We were were fed up with being indoors and wanted to get exercise in the sun, even if we’d have to deal with ice and snow.
It was time to break trail on the 2009 winter version Uncle Tom trail. Craig, I, and Jody the dog headed up the 600 foot climb to the ridge leading up to the summit of Moody Mountain. On the way up we discovered this hybrid tree which is a combo of a maple and Eastern Hophornbeam (Ironwood).
They must have fused together when they were immature.
The snow was 4-6 “ deep when we started and up to 1 foot deep up on top.
We stopped at top and decided to have a boil up, but the wind was blowing, so we moved downslope and hunkered down on the lee side of an old stone wall , where we fired up our stoves and boiled up hot drinks and ate some of Craig’s home made energy bars . http://www.marksdailyapple.com/make-your-own-primal-energy-bars-in-10-easy-steps/
